Transforming Coastal Properties: A Hardscape Triumph
In Oak Island, North Carolina, the picturesque views of the coastline could belie the challenges faced by landscape professionals. A recent project led by Blair Walton, founder and CEO of Element Outdoor Living, illustrates how a landscape can be transformed even amid tough environmental conditions. Collaborating closely with homeowners and architects, Walton and his team embarked on a unique journey to revamp a difficult, long, thin residential property that was further challenged by salt spray and sandy soil.
Innovation Amid Adversity
Initially, the existing house and landscaping were deemed inadequate and required a complete overhaul to bring a client’s visionary ideas to life. Walton's creative approach was key to overcoming hurdles, working closely with the homeowner to adjust plans, including repositioning the house closer to the street. This adjustment not only improved the view but opened the space for pathways and vibrant yet resilient plants, advocating for a landscape that could withstand the harsh oceanfront climate.
Creating an Oasis
One of the standout elements of this significant project involves the restoration of dunes directly across the street. Once characterized by dirt and weeds, the area has now flourished into a serene park-like setting that includes rolling hills and walking trails—an ideal retreat for contemplation and adventure. Noteworthy for using local materials and sustainable practices, the landscape design boasts a variety of robust plants, such as muhly grass, all selected for their color and resilience to the coastal environment.
A Vision Realized
The culmination of hard work and innovative thinking garnered the project recognition: a gold award from the National Association of Landscape Professionals. Walton believes that the success lies not merely in the aesthetic but in how well the space fulfills the client’s desires for both adventure and privacy. He notes, ”Creating a sanctuary that promotes relaxation while encouraging exploration was a challenge—one that ultimately paid off.”
